NagiB 2011 is sending out an invitation to a tasting of art practices

The seventh edition of NagiB Contemporary Dance Festival will take place in different locations in Maribor between August 28 and September 10 2011. This year the festival invites its audience to the artist’s “kitchen” for a “tasting” of different practices and methodologies of creative process.

Five international artists active in the area of contemporary dance and performance art will invite you to their “kitchen”, namely Coraline Lamaison (France), Fanni Futterknecht (Austria), Michelle Rizzo (Italy), Vlasta Veselko (Slovenia) and a maker selected based on the video material applied to the call Ten Minute Video That Can Grow Into a Performance, which was open for (non)artists of all profiles and generations. The two week residency will offer to the selected artists an opportunity to develop their ideas in a creative dialogue with two renowned dramaturges Robert Steijn (Austria) and Igor Dobričić (Serbia/Holland), while the format will at the same time allow for a sharing of the creative process with the audience. In other words, the focal point of this year’s NagiB is processuality as one of the most precious forms of individual expression, which will bring together makers, advisers, theoreticians, and all those not indifferent to contemporary dance.

The festival will be introduced on August 28 at 8:00 pm in the courtyard of Vetrinjski dvorec Mansion with an opening “specialty” Taste of NagiB, a get-acquainted meeting, where the artists will present their ideas which they will work on during the festival. Dramaturge Robert Steijn will use this opportunity to open up two fields of questions: Say Yes to What and How to Make a Vow. The opening event will be followed by the United Party of the three Maribor-based performing arts festivals which are taking place simultaneously, namely NagiB, Platforma, Crossings, and Udarnik Open Air, featuring the spicy Bosnian duet Laka.

On September 3 2011 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, we will meet in Maribor Puppet Theatre to embark on our first journey through the construction of the dance performance Intuition on a Plate. Robert Steijn will try to bring the guest artists’ “works in progress” closer to the audience by revealing that which commonly remains hidden, through the opening up of imagination, intuitive decision-making, and crossing into the unknown. Our second journey Nail Soup, which will take place on Saturday, September 10 2011 also from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm in Maribor Puppet Theatre, will recap the process of the second week of the residency. Week two is led by Igor Dobričić and follows the method taken from the Nail Soup story, the idea of which is based on external conditions (of a work) as a motivation factor of artistic activation, which grounds artistic imagination as a tool for overcoming “impossible” circumstances. The two journeys attempt to offer a presentation of the artistic process, an exchange of experience, opinions, knowledges, tastes, pleasures, and an opportunity to open up a space for asking questions.

You should also not miss out on two thematic breakfast discussions which will take place on two consecutive Wednesdays, that is on August 31 and September 7 at 9:30 am in the festival’s venue. In a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and with a cup of coffee and croissants, we will discuss the creative process and the role of the choreographer within the art market. On September 6 the festival is preparing a special “offer” – “Dinner with an Artist”. The application process for this special opportunity to spend a culinary evening with an artist, cook her/him dinner, or invite her/him to one’s home or to a selected location will be carried out in the time of the festival at the festival venue. The festival’s closing party will take place on September 10 from 10:00 pm on.
